Strange: No Break-Even Here, Blockbuster There!

Mani Ratnam’s historic magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan – Part 1 has turned out to be a huge blockbuster in its Tamil Version. The film is doing roaring business in Tamil Nadu and also Overseas. The Hindi version is also running at a decent pace and is sure to cross the 20 crore mark in the North belt.

In the US, it becomes an All Time Blockbuster and emerges as a new industry hit beating Rajinikanth and Shankar’s 2Point0. This is the first time in the last three decades that a non-Rajinikanth movie has become the No. 1 Tamil movie in the USA.

The film has crossed the $5 million mark in the US and since there is not much competition in the coming days the collections are expected to be steady.

However, the story is completely different in the Telugu states. Ponniyin Selvan’s Telugu version opened decently but couldn’t maintain the momentum after the first week. The film will fall short of the break-even mark.

The trade says that the no nativity factor, poor establishment of characters, and flat narration are the main culprits behind PS-1’s poor performance in the Telugu states.
