A few weeks ago, an official announcement confirmed that Sundar C would direct Rajinikanth’s 173rd film, with Kamal Haasan producing it. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, Sundar C has now officially stepped away from the project.

Following his exit, strong speculation suggested that Parking fame director Ramkumar Balakrishnan narrated a script to Rajinikanth. Reports claim the superstar liked the narration, making Ramkumar Balakrishnan a strong contender, though no official confirmation has been issued yet.

Amid this, fresh buzz indicates that director Ashwath Marimuthu recently met Rajinikanth and narrated a script. After the narration, Rajinikanth reportedly asked him to develop the story further, adding another name to the race for Thalaivar’s 173rd film.

Sources suggest Rajinikanth may soon choose between Ramkumar Balakrishnan and Ashwath Marimuthu. Once the director is finalised, shooting is expected to begin by March 2026, keeping the project firmly on schedule.

Interestingly, both directors were earlier associated with separate projects starring Simbu, and official updates were even released. However, those films were reportedly dropped due to Arasan, prompting both filmmakers to pitch their scripts to Rajinikanth.

Social media reactions remain divided. Some fans feel Ashwath Marimuthu would suit Rajinikanth better, especially to highlight his humour, while others believe Ramkumar Balakrishnan is the safer and more likely choice.

Trade experts have urged caution, calling the Ashwath Marimuthu buzz a rumour. They state that once Simbu completes Arasan, he will immediately start his film with Ashwath Marimuthu, making Ramkumar Balakrishnan the probable director for Rajinikanth’s 173rd film.
