Ranabaali Sequel: Rahul Sankrityan Ignoring Box Office?

Vijay Deverakonda’s Ranabaali is running with mixed talk and trying to sustain its collections in Telugu states. Amid the film’s theatrical run, director Rahul Sankrityan has opened up about the possibility of a sequel.

In a recent interview, Rahul said Ranabaali has enough material for another part, but a sequel has not been confirmed. He said several character backstories and details did not make it into the final cut.

The director explained that the film was designed with an open-ended narrative, leaving room to explore different characters further. The backstories of Ranabaali and Easwari Rao’s character could be developed in greater detail if a sequel takes shape. However, whether that happens depends on several factors falling into place.

Rahul also spoke about the four-year journey of making Ranabaali, which involved extensive research and technical preparation. Shooting in the extreme summer heat of Kurnool made the production physically and mentally demanding.

Set during the 1876-1878 famine, the film aimed for a grounded and timeless presentation rather than a documentary-style approach. Rahul also revealed that Vijay underwent intense preparation, including voice modulation and dialect training, to portray Ranabaali. The actor also performed risky stunts, including horseback riding.

The director credited Mythri Movie Makers for backing his vision and allowing him to build the film’s world without compromising on quality.

Rahul also discussed his interest in history, literature and spirituality, along with lessons learned from the controversies surrounding his earlier film Shyam Singha Roy.

The director now wants to complete his next film faster. The period setting and demanding production of Ranabaali made the process lengthy, prompting him to look for a more efficient approach to future projects.

For now, a Ranabaali sequel remains uncertain. While Rahul believes there is more story to explore, the film’s limited box-office performance and other factors might push him to take up something else and forget about Ranabaali altogether.
