Ritesh Rana arrived in Tollywood like a breath of fresh air with Mathu Vadalara. The film did not take itself too seriously and delivered madcap fun. Working with a wafer-thin plot, he built suspense through a quirky narrative style and used modern filmmaking techniques to keep it engaging. Most importantly, he tapped into Satya’s comic timing perfectly, turning the film into a watchable experience.
Mathu Vadalara 2 continued that momentum to an extent, with Satya once again stealing the show and the film working as a decent follow-up.
In between the two films, he directed Happy Birthday, which flopped miserably. While it aimed to be different within the comedy space, it lacked cohesion. The narrative felt scattered, the humor did not land consistently, and the film ended up confusing more than entertaining.
Now, with his latest film Jetlee, the situation has not improved, and it has exposed Ritesh Rana’s skills as a director.
This time, Ritesh Rana attempts a thriller but blends it with his signature wacky humor, and that is where it falls apart. In Mathu Vadalara, the absurdity felt organic and worked within the story. Here, the comedy feels forced. A few gags land, but most do not. The confined flight setting adds to the problem, making the film feel visually and narratively suffocating.
That has led to a clear reaction.
Many are now questioning what happened to the Ritesh Rana who delivered Mathu Vadalara. The question being asked is straightforward, is he just a one-film wonder?
Now, Ritesh Rana has announced that his next film is going to be a horror project with no comedy at all. It is a complete shift from what he has done so far. Whether that reinvention works or not will decide how his career moves from here. As of now, Ritesh Rana who directed Jetlee is not what the audience expected from him after Mathu Vadalara.
