Inside Talk: 200-Cr Budget Puts Senior Star Film in Risk

A little birdie from the Telugu industry has dropped some exclusive information that is making rounds in film circles. A senior star hero recently announced a new film with a director who had earlier delivered a big hit for him. The announcement created positive buzz, as fans usually expect better results when a successful hero director combination reunites. However, according to the latest inside information, after internal discussions and budget assessments, the producer has reportedly concluded that the project may not be financially viable in the current market scenario.

The primary concern is budget escalation. Both the hero and the director command high remunerations, immediately pushing the film into a high-risk zone. Added to this, the director is known for long shooting schedules and extended timelines. These inflate costs through sets, locations, technicians’ fees, interest on borrowed money, and post-production expenses. Because of these factors, the budget is unlikely to come below Rs. 200 crores, even with careful planning.

In today’s market, that figure is a serious risk. The theatrical pull of senior heroes is no longer as predictable as before. While they still guarantee solid openings, recovering a Rs. 200 crore budget is difficult unless the film performs exceptionally well not just in Telugu but also in other versions like Hindi. Adding to the challenge, OTT and satellite buyers are no longer willing to pay premium prices based solely on the hero-director combination.

From the producer’s perspective, from a purely business standpoint, the project reportedly does not make financial sense at this stage.

However, there is one exception. If the production banner treats this project as its prestige venture, commercial evaluations may take a back seat, and the ‘risky’ film might hit the floors. As of now, it looks fifty fifty.
