Sania Mirza’s Khel Ratna in trouble!

Tennis star Sania Mirza was up for the renowned Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award however there seem to be some problems in her way. The sports ministry was sent a notice by the Karnataka High Court last Wednesday regarding Mirza’s selection for the coveted award.

This notice was sent by H.R. Girisha, a city-based Paralympic Games medallist. But the question is why the petition was filed when Mirza is perfectly qualified for the prestigious award, being ranked number one in women’s doubles. The answer simply is that if the selection is based on the points system, Girisha 90 points as compared to Sania’s 42, why was Girisha overlooked for the honour.

Counsel M.S. Shamsundar, Girisha’s lawyer, clarified that Girisha is not against Sania winning the award but not at the cost of being ignored in front of popular players.
