Sankranthi Clash: Mahesh Won’t, Others Can’t

Five mainstream Telugu films are releasing this Sankranthi season with the obvious biggie being Mahesh Babu and Trivikram’s Guntur Kaaram, and others being Saindhav, Eagle, Naa Saami Ranga, and Hanuman. The producers of these films, barring Hanuman producers, took part in a meeting today to see if anyone would back out, but that didn’t happen and all of them have locked in on the clash.

The primal point here is that being a proper Sankranthi big hero film, Guntur Kaaram can’t go back. Mahesh is invested in the Sankranthi season and after releasing two songs and the teaser, he simply won’t step back.

And as for the other films, they thrive on this clash aspect. Releasing on the same day as Guntur Kaaram – 12 January brings some attraction to Hanuman. This is more advantageous than the film getting a solo release some other day in the year.

The Sankranthi season and clash factor will only help the film. Even if the screen count is low on first day, the film will have the chance to pick up later if it comes with the right content. They have released the trailer and songs as well, so there is no going back now.

Saindhav is a low-buzz film and it has a better shot if it releases this Sankranthi. Venkatesh is a family hero and he commands pull during Sankranthi season. They too have dropped an elongated teaser and a song, with their eye firmly on Sankranthi. 13th January is the release date for the film.

Ravi Teja’s Eagle is also arriving for Sankranthi. Ravi Teja’s form is in shambles but the trailer was able to create some buzz. The makers feel Sankranthi is the best season to mint some money.

Nagarjuna’s Naa Sami Ranga has also locked Sankranthi release but the date is yet to be announced. This film also had its teaser and song launch recently. Given Nag’s recent run of form, the best season for him is Sankranthi as he can find his own set of festival audience.

The thing with these films is that all of them have released the promotional content already. If they skip Sankranthi to avoid clash, the promotional stuff will become stale and on top of that, finding another good release slot is a tough and risky thing to do.

Another point is that Guntur Kaaram is the only high-stake film here. So it will certainly pick the Sankranthi slot for a better shot at the box office.

The rest have lower targets and they can be reached if these films come with the right content this festival season. The clash factor will keep their names fresh in the minds of festival audience and in turn help in revenues if they come with the right content. This is a much better option than postponing to some other time of the year.
