Sardar 2: Can Karthi’s Disaster Survive OTT Backlash?

Karthi‘s anticipated sequel Sardar 2 directed by PS Mithran was released in theatres on September 10th and received disastrous responses from both audiences and critics.

Due to the underwhelming word of mouth, Sardar 2 crashed at the box office, completed its theatrical run with disaster status and also ended up as the lowest-grossing film of Karthi’s career.

Following this terrible theatrical run, Sardar 2 is now all set to stream on the Amazon Prime OTT platform starting October 1st in five languages such as Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.

Usually, most films are released on OTT after a four-week window following their theatrical run. However, since Sardar 2 ended up as a huge disaster, it seems the makers of the film have planned to release it on OTT earlier than usual.

Since Karthi’s last two films, Vaa Vaathiyaar and Sardar 2, ended up as terrible disappointments, he has almost lost his goodwill and reputation among audiences. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether Sardar 2 receives at least some positive reception from OTT viewers and brings some relief to the actor.

Because of the theatrical failure of Sardar 2, no one is interested in its OTT release; however, many films that failed to perform well in theatres have gone on to find a good reception among OTT audiences. Hence, we will have to wait and see how Karthi’s Sardar 2 is received by OTT audiences upon its release on October 1st.
