Dark Side of OTT Deals: Tollywood’s Silent Film Dumping

A strange trend is slowly becoming visible in Tollywood. Some films are reaching theatres without any buzz or promotions, and in a few cases, audiences barely even know that the movie has been released.

The recent release of Aadi Saikumar’s SI Yugandhar is a good example. The film arrived on October 2, but there was hardly any noise around its theatrical release. No promotions, no awareness and no excitement among moviegoers.

So why would a producer release a film like this? The answer lies with the business deal behind the film.

For some producers, the theatrical release has increasingly become a formality. If the film already has an OTT agreement, the producer may have a fixed window within which the movie has to be released theatrically before it moves to the OTT platform.

When that deadline starts approaching, spending more money on promotions for a film with little theatrical potential may not make business sense. Instead, the movie gets a limited theatrical release, fulfils its formal requirement and eventually moves to OTT.

This has created what can be called a silent dumping culture.

From a producer’s point of view, this may look like damage control. But there is a bigger problem.

A film’s theatrical failure can directly hurt an actor’s credibility and market. The circumstances behind the release rarely matter to the general audience. They only see a film that arrived without buzz, failed to attract crowds and disappeared.

That is where this strategy becomes deadly. A producer may save money on promotions and satisfy an OTT deadline, but the damage does not end with the film’s theatrical run.

Such silent releases could become a dangerous short-term strategy for Tollywood. What may look like a practical business decision for a producer could eventually kill the actor and filmmaker’s credibility and pull among theater going audience.
