Remake Of Most Watched OTT Film, Costly Mistake?

At a day and age when the audience have access to watch all language films on OTT, it is not the wisest of ideas to work on remakes. But that didn’t stop Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar from materializing the Hindi remake of Soorarai Pottru, a Tamil action drama which has Suriya in the lead role.

The Hindi remake of Soorarai Pottru was launched today. Akshay Kumar will reprise Suriya’s role in the remake. This brings us to the question – will this remake end up as a costly mistake?

Firstly, Soorarai Pottru was a huge OTT hit. A vast section of the OTT audience might have already watched the Amazon Prime original which garnered rave reviews. Moreover, Soorarai Pottru is based on real incidents, so there is not much scope to alter the narrative to offer something substantially new to the Hindi audience.

Soorari Pottru is one of the most-watched films on OTT and the makers appear to be underestimating the power of OTT as they have green signaled the Hindi remake. They are conveniently ignoring the fact that a large section of the audience would have watched film on OTT already and might not be as enthusiastic to watch in theatres again.

Sudha Kongara who directed the original is helming the remake as well.
