Rajamouli’s Unfinished Epic Dream: Can Varanasi Deliver?

SS Rajamouli has conquered box-office records with larger-than-life storytelling. But there is one thing that has apparently never fully satisfied him: the way Indian epics have been presented on screen. The filmmaker recently admitted that he was never completely happy with how stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata were brought to life. That dissatisfaction he had could explain the ambition behind his next big venture, Varanasi.

For Rajamouli, the appeal of an epic goes beyond grand sets, powerful characters and spectacular battles. These stories carry enormous emotional and cultural weight. But translating that richness to the screen is a challenge. His latest remarks suggest that the filmmaker has long wanted to see these stories presented in a way that matches the scale of his imagination.

Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, gives him another opportunity to explore that ambition. The film’s connection to the Ramayana has already added to the curiosity surrounding the project, although its complete storytelling approach remains to be seen.

Rajamouli has raised the bar for himself with every major film. This time, the question is whether Varanasi can deliver the epic experience he has always wanted to see on screen.
