Box office results have taken an unexpected turn in the last few years. Some films were supposed to do outstanding business. However, the results were not up to the mark. On the other hand, some mid-budget movies brought good news to the theatres during a period when nothing was working in favour of the producers.
But the situation was different for a few movies. Some of them created records only at certain places. It’s not that none of them worked at all. The list is small but interesting at the same time.
1) Dhurandhar: The Revenge
Ranveer Singh was marked as over by critics. This was because the versatile actor was failing to pull crowds after the pandemic. He needed someone who could bring out his true potential, and he eventually found Aditya Dhar. The buzz was low. This was because early reports mentioned it as a spy thriller, a theme commonly followed by filmmakers in Bollywood.
But thanks to the attractive promotional materials, buzz was built up to some extent. The opening for the first film in December last year was slow. The characters started building a fan base, and the authenticity was loved by everyone. It eventually became a big blockbuster and created a lot of excitement for the follow-up, released last month. Despite paid previews being cancelled, it had a big opening in India and overseas. The best numbers came from J&K, Himachal, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttarakhand, UP, and Rajasthan.
2) Pushpa 2: The Rule
Allu Arjun was never expected to become a popular face in the Hindi market. However, one film turned the tables for the Icon Star. Sukumar brought the best side of the actor to the big screen. It was a character that he had never played in the past. The first glimpse hinted at an entertaining ride that was expected to pull crowds, specifically at the single screens. The idea worked, with the first look, songs, and trailer creating a lot of buzz.
For three years, people were eagerly waiting for an update on the sequel. People wanted to see the confrontation that would happen between Pushpa and Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat. The long wait helped to take a bumper start at the box office. Hindi viewers also did not stop themselves from entering theatres. The numbers were huge in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand.
3) RRR
S.S. Rajamouli has created different worlds in his films. The presentation has always worked, pulling a lot of the audience. The Baahubali franchise established him in a big manner, specifically in North India. People wanted to know what he was making next. This time, he made a story with two fictional freedom fighters of India. Additional release in 3D also helped to create buzz. Two big superstars were in the lead. The strategy helped with ticket sales in two places, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
4) Chhaava
After Bad Newwz, trade experts gave up on Vicky Kaushal. Everyone was tired of him doing the same kinds of romantic films. It seems like even he understood the viewers’ disappointment. An entertaining take on the story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj seemingly looks impossible. But Laxman Utekar achieved it without any flaws. He added a lot of emotions, too. The formula was successful. The subject touched the hearts of everyone, mainly in Maharashtra.
5) Kantara Chapter 1
Movies made with less than Rs. 50 crores are very rare nowadays. Every producer is focused on making grand-scale films. In between that, Rishab Shetty decided to make something for only Rs. 15 crores. The collections in the Hindi market were also good. The actor invested a little bit more in the sequel. It took three years, but Rishab’s research and hard work were clearly spotted on screen. Shetty already has a big fan base in Karnataka. All of them purchased tickets, helping the movie to record heavy collections in the state.
6) Jawan
Two years ago, the lineup of flops ended for Shah Rukh Khan with Pathaan. Everyone enjoyed watching the superstar beating the bad guys on screen. Atlee applied the same formula to Jawan. The subject was outdated. However, the presentation was unique. It appealed to modern-day audiences who visited theatres every Friday. The opening was bigger than Siddharth Anand’s movie. It also became the highest-grossing film in West Bengal, alongside creating records everywhere else.
8) Roi Roi Binale
The sudden demise of Zubeen Garg in September last year left everyone in the music industry heartbroken. The biggest impact of the artist’s passing was spotted in Assam and the entire Northeast. Everyone was mourning at their homes, keeping their businesses closed. The fans are still seeking justice for their favourite. Audience’s love for ZG was specifically spotted when the advance booking for his final film started. People purchased tickets for their shows even three weeks in advance. This eventually led to the highest collections in the whole Northeast area and in Assam at the same time.
9) Leo
Thalapathy Vijay’s films can guarantee that they will attract big crowds to the theatres. The end results of the movies hardly matter to his fans. They have only one wish, which is to get entertained for more than three hours while sitting inside the auditorium. Lokesh Kanagaraj ensured that he would satisfy the superstar’s supporters this time. Critics claimed that the action-drama was a forced entry into the director’s cinematic universe, which started with Kaithi. But no one listened to those reactions, leading to the highest collections in Tamil Nadu.
10) Vaazha II: Biopic of a Billion Bros
The first film was an unexpected hit when it came out two years ago. The central theme was liked everywhere. It took everyone back to their school memories, where they used to have a lot of fun and maintain a close friendship until they became adults. The same formula was used in the follow-up with a longer runtime. The characters were different. The comedy made everyone laugh out loud in theatres. The emotions made a few people cry at the same time. The strategy behind bringing an entertaining story specifically worked with heavy collections in Kerala.
Many other big and small films have locked their respective release dates for this year and the upcoming year. A few of them have been in development for a long time. People are expecting some good content. But only time will tell where they will create records in terms of box office collections once they arrive on the big screen.
