Suriya 49: A Sea Action Epic or Risky Choice?

Following the back to back commercial success of Karuppu and Vishwanath and Sons, actor Suriya’s next release is going to be Scene directed by Jithu Madhavan, which is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on November 6th as a Diwali special.

Even before starting the shoot of the Scene, Suriya announced that he is collaborating with director TJ Gnanavel once again for his 48th film after the success of Jai Bhim.

Although there isn’t any official update on Suriya’s 49th film following his project with TJ Gnanavel, sources suggest that he is planning to collaborate with director Mathimaran Pugazhendhi, who made a solid debut in Kollywood with the film Mandaadi.

Furthermore, there is also information that this project is going to be produced by Kalaipuli S Thanu and will be a coastal action drama mounted on a huge scale.

Suriya was supposed to do the film Vaadivaasal under the production of Kalaipuli S Thanu. However, due to various reasons, the project was shelved and Kalaipuli S Thanu still holds Suriya’s dates.

Subsequently, instead of Vaadivaasal, Suriya agreed to do a film under Kalaipuli S Thanu’s V Creations banner. Accordingly, Kalaipuli S. Thanu has now asked Suriya to select a director of his own choice.

While Suriya was hearing narrations from multiple directors, reportedly Vetrimaaran, who is still on good terms with Suriya despite Vaadivaasal being shelved, introduced Mathimaran Pugazhendhi to him. Sources suggest that this is how Suriya 49 took shape and an official announcement regarding this project will drop soon.

In response to this speculation, while some Suriya fans claim that Mathimaran Pugazhendhi is a solid director and believe that if this project materializes, it would be a sure-shot success, others feel the opposite.

They suggest that although Mandaadi emerged as a commercial success because of its jaw-dropping visuals of boat sequences, the film didn’t have proper drama or a strong story. Furthermore, they feel that the success of Mandaadi was a fluke.

Hence, they urge Suriya to agree to collaborate with him only if the script is solid; otherwise, he should reject it and not accept the collaboration just because of the commercial success of Mandaadi.

However, all these are just social media speculations and there is still no official update on Suriya’s 49th film. It remains to be seen whether Suriya and Mathimaran Pugazhendhi will collaborate for a sea based action drama and if they do, how the project will take shape in the future.
