In today’s Telugu cinema, one debate keeps coming back, are stars relying more on image than acting?
Take Ustaad Bhagat Singh. Pawan Kalyan carries the film with sheer presence and swag. The screen energy is undeniable. But beyond that, the question many are asking is, does the performance go deeper?
Because increasingly, it feels like image is doing the heavy lifting.
Moments are designed around elevation, not emotion. Scenes are built to celebrate the star, not challenge the actor. And as long as those moments land, the rest often gets overlooked.
But is that enough anymore?
If we look at Mahesh Babu’s career, there’s a visible balance. Films like Athadu, Murari, Businessman, 1: Nenokkadine, and Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu show an effort to balance image with performance. The star is present, but so is the actor.
With Pawan Kalyan, the recall often leans more towards iconic films like Kushi and Tholi Prema. Beyond that, the conversation largely revolves around moments, dialogues, and aura rather than layered performances.
And that’s where the larger concern comes in.
Are stars taking the audience for granted?
Or are audiences themselves encouraging this?
Because fan culture today plays a big role. There is a clear demand for elevations, mass moments, and whistle-worthy scenes. When that becomes the primary expectation, filmmakers naturally design films to deliver exactly that.
In the process, acting takes a backseat.
This creates a cycle, stars lean into image, fans celebrate it, and content slowly becomes secondary.
But over time, this comes at a cost.
Too much hype can become a burden. When expectations are built purely on image, even a slight dip in engagement makes the film feel underwhelming. Without strong performances or storytelling to back it up, the impact doesn’t last.
That’s where balance becomes important.
Because image may bring the audience to theatres, but acting is what makes them stay, remember, and return.
And right now, Telugu cinema seems to be tilting heavily towards one side.
