Empty Summer: Are Telugu Filmmakers Losing the Season to IPL?

Summer used to be the biggest season for Telugu cinema.

Every week, there was a release.

Big stars, small films, experiments, theatres were alive. Audiences had choices.

But this summer feels… empty.

Not even one truly remarkable Telugu film has made an impact so far. The excitement, the buzz, the theatrical energy, all seem to be missing.

And in that vacuum, one thing has comfortably taken over.

IPL.

It’s easy to blame the tournament. After all, it dominates attention, pulls family audiences, and eats into evening shows. But the real question is, is IPL the reason, or just an excuse?

Because strong films have always survived competition. The bigger issue lies within the industry itself.

There is a visible sense of comfort and hesitation among filmmakers. Instead of taking risks and owning the summer window, many seem to be avoiding it altogether, waiting for “safer” dates, better slots, less competition.

And in that process, an entire season is being surrendered.

That’s a problem.

Because when filmmakers step back, something else fills the space. Right now, it’s cricket. Tomorrow, it could be OTT, or simply audience disinterest.

The danger is not just one weak season.

It’s the habit of giving up ground.

Summer was once a battlefield, now it feels like a vacant slot.

And that reflects a deeper issue.

Where are the confident films?
Where are the directors willing to take the first step?
Where is the urgency to own the audience’s time?

Because if the industry itself is not ready to compete, it cannot complain about losing attention.

IPL didn’t take over summer.
