Telugu horror cinema seems to have lost its ability to scare audiences. Films that once kept viewers on the edge of their seats are now relying on predictable tricks, over-the-top BGM and sound effects, and weak writing. Instead of fear, many of these films leave audiences frustrated.
One big problem is the overuse of jump scares. Sudden loud noises, banging doors, and random animal sounds have become common tools to frighten viewers. But these tricks offer only momentary shocks. Without proper tension and atmosphere, they fail to create lasting fear.
Another growing trend is turning ghosts into victims with tragic backstories. While emotional storytelling can work, filmmakers often push sympathy so hard that the supernatural threat loses its impact.
Horror-comedies have also become a safe formula for many filmmakers. Comedy can work well alongside horror, but badly timed jokes destroy the tension, as seen in The Raja Saab.
Weak writing is another major issue. Many films use familiar ideas such as black magic, possession, and haunted houses without building a convincing story around them. The supernatural elements often lack clear rules, while the characters face little real danger. Without meaningful stakes, even visually impressive scenes fail to make an impact.
Films such as Masooda and Virupaksha showed that audiences are still interested in horror when mystery, atmosphere, and storytelling work together. They were not flawless films, but they offered more than a collection of loud noises and predictable scares.
Today’s viewers have access to international horror films and crime thrillers that explore different ideas and storytelling styles. Telugu filmmakers can no longer expect audiences to be satisfied with recycled formulas. The genre needs stronger screenplays, genuine threats, and patient tension-building.
Telugu horror cinema still has a huge audience for filmmakers to tap into. But the genre needs directors who understand that genuinely scaring people is no easy task. It requires solid writing, terrific execution, and superb technical values. Without these elements, even the loudest BGM and the most terrifying-looking ghost will fail to scare anyone.
