Ranabaali: Where Exactly Vijay Deverakonda Going Wrong?

Vijay Deverakonda seems to be going through a disastrous and confusing phase in his career, with a string of box-office failures. Ranabaali was one of the most anticipated Telugu releases of the year.

Despite weak promotional assets, expectations were high that the film would mark a roaring comeback for Vijay Deverakonda and silence his critics.

But did that happen? The answer is a BIG NO.

The biggest problem is Vijay’s choice of roles. He is clearly invested in Ranabaali and tries his best, but all that effort goes to waste. The character gives him little to do beyond looking menacing and ferocious. What initially appears powerful soon becomes forced, exhausting, and even caricaturish. Vijay looks awkward in several scenes, with mannerisms that simply do not suit him. He seems miscast in this kind of character, and no amount of intensity can fix that.

This brings back memories of Nani’s Jadal in The Paradise. Over-the-top performances and forced characterizations, with actors struggling to fit roles that demand more than just intensity, are becoming a worrying trend.

Nani started exploring this aggressive mass-hero template more seriously from 2023 onwards. Until Dasara, he had delivered a fair share of feel-good films that worked with audiences. Vijay, on the other hand, has been stuck in the mass-hero template since Arjun Reddy. His attempts at other genres have also struggled to deliver memorable films.

The bigger question is whether these actors are choosing strong, fully developed scripts or rushing to the sets without figuring everything out. Outdated writing, script changes during production, and reshoots could all be contributing to the problem.

For actors aspiring to become pan-India stars, mass action offers a bigger commercial opportunity than feel-good romances. But going mass cannot mean behaving like an invincible alpha hero in every scene. In such a scenario, romance-action films could offer a better middle ground for heroes like Vijay Deverakonda, where their star power is combined with emotional depth and believable characterization.

The mass-hero experiment is not working for Nani and Vijay. They need to rethink their choices, find stronger scripts, and reconnect with the qualities that made audiences root for them in the first place.

Fans also need to understand that criticism of Vijay Deverakonda’s films cannot be dismissed as hate. Repeated box-office failures demand honest questions, not blind defense. Paid PR cannot save a film, honest feedback can.
