
Lord Mountbatten was appointed as the last Viceroy of India in February 1947. He was instructed to oversee the transfer of power by June 1948.However the communal disturbances in India advanced the date to 1947. It was Mountbatten’s choice to choose August 15th as the D-Day.
Mountbatten considered August 15 to be a lucky day for him as on that day in 1945, the Japanese Army had surrendered during World War II. But, many astrologers considered August 15 to be inauspicious for India. However it was how Independent India was born.
