Others Winning Big: Why Only Tollywood Struggling?

A few years ago, Telugu cinema looked unstoppable. After massive successes like Baahubali, Pushpa, and RRR, many believed Tollywood was slowly becoming the biggest film industry in India. Big stars, huge budgets, and pan-India releases created enormous excitement. But the current situation tells a different story. While Telugu cinema is struggling to maintain regular theatrical success, several other film industries are quietly delivering strong box office results.

Marathi cinema recently scored a surprise success with Deool Band 2. The film collected around Rs. 15 crores net during its extended opening weekend and is expected to continue performing strongly. Malayalam cinema once again proved its consistency with Drishyam 3, which collected nearly Rs. 50 crores net in its first weekend alone while also performing strongly overseas.

Tamil cinema also found success recently. Suriya’s Karuppu collected more than Rs. 130 crores net within two weeks despite mixed reactions. Bollywood too is showing strength again. Big commercial films like Dhurandhar are delivering blockbuster numbers and reminding everyone that Hindi cinema still has massive reach when content connects with audiences.

That naturally raises one uncomfortable question.

Why is Telugu cinema struggling?

Tollywood is facing multiple problems right now. Many theatres, especially single screens, are struggling because there are not enough major releases arriving regularly. Big stars are increasingly spending two or three years on pan-India projects. Budgets are growing bigger, production timelines are becoming longer, and release dates keep changing. Several major projects also moved away from summer slots, leaving theatres without enough crowd-pulling content. Smaller films, meanwhile, are failing to consistently attract audiences.

The ongoing fight between producers and exhibitors has further damaged the situation. Public press meets, accusations from both sides, resignations within industry bodies, and growing tensions have created a negative image for Tollywood at a time when unity is needed the most. Producers blame exhibitors. Exhibitors blame producers. Some point at OTT platforms, IPL season, or changing audience habits. But industries like Malayalam cinema continue proving that strong storytelling and a steady flow of content can regularly bring audiences back to theatres.

Tollywood still remains one of India’s strongest film industries with enormous long-term potential. But pan-India ambitions alone cannot sustain theatres throughout the year. Theatres need regular content. Mid-range films need to perform. Producers need stronger planning. Telugu cinema created some of Indian cinema’s biggest moments. The challenge now is finding consistency again before the gap becomes bigger.
