Toxic OTT Locked: Can Yash Still Recover One Last Time?

Toxic was supposed to be the biggest and most ambitious pan-India film from Kannada. Instead, it turned into a colossal theatrical disaster. Negative word of mouth spread from the very first shows, and the film never managed to recover.

The film reportedly ended its theatrical run at around Rs. 300 crore gross against a reported Rs. 800 crore breakeven target.

The financial story became even uglier after the theatrical debacle. Before release, there were reports that OTT platforms had offered around Rs. 150 crore for the digital rights. Yash reportedly rejected those offers, expecting the film’s value to rise after a successful theatrical run. Instead, OTT offers crashed to around Rs. 30 crore, leaving the makers with little choice but to accept a drastically lower deal.

Now, Toxic arrives on ZEE5 on September 25. For the film, this is almost a second examination, but under completely different conditions. People who refused to spend money on it in theatres can now watch it from home. This time, there is no huge theatrical ticket price and no massive expectation hanging over the film. The audience already knows they are watching a film that was thrashed in theatres and flopped miserably.

OTT can be both forgiving and brutal. A film that looked unbearable in theatres can sometimes find a small audience at home because expectations are lower. At the same time, Toxic’s flaws could become even more obvious when viewers can watch it comfortably and discuss every questionable scene online.

The theatrical audience has already delivered its verdict. OTT will now reveal whether there is any section of viewers that sees the film differently. Toxic now gets one final opportunity to prove that there was more to it than the disaster audiences saw in theatres.
