13 years jail for Facebook Post

An objectionable post on Facebook got 13 years jail sentence to a Pakistani. An Anti-Terrorism court in Pakistan handed over the sentence to 25 years old Rizwan Haider. The court also imposed a fine of 2,40,000 Pakistan Rupees (1,68,000 INR) on Rizwan. A Facebook post of Rizwan in January proved too costly for him.

Rizwan is a Shia Muslim and it is alleged that his post hurt the sentiments of Sunny Muslims. A case was registered on him later. Rizwan’s lawyer argued that he did not post anything on Facebook but only ‘Liked’ a post. The lawyer is arguing that they have a right to appeal against this rigorous punishment.

Pakistan government is of the opinion that hate speech is aiding Terrorism in youth of the court. Pakistan government intensified its laws controlling Hate Speech. The government made several arrests in the last few months under this new laws.
