The Ministry of Education has announced that Artificial Intelligence will be part of the school curriculum from Class 3 starting 2026–27. The move aims to make the next generation of Indians AI-aware from an early age.
A national framework is being developed to integrate AI into different grade levels. The focus is on preparing both teachers and students to adapt to new technologies. The challenge lies in training nearly one crore teachers to deliver AI education effectively.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is leading the effort by designing a structured framework across schools. A pilot project is already training teachers to use AI tools for lesson planning. The goal is to ready India’s education system for the digital economy.
At present, more than 18,000 CBSE schools offer AI as a skill subject up to Class 6, while Classes 9 to 12 have it as an optional subject. This expansion aims to make AI learning accessible to students across all levels.
The Government of India has stated that while around two million jobs could be displaced due to AI, the technology could also create nearly eight million new opportunities if supported by the right ecosystem and skills training.
