The All India Gaming Federation (AIGF) has urged the government to withdraw the Online Gaming Bill. In a letter to the Union Home Minister, the Federation requested the Centre to take back the proposed legislation.
According to the AIGF, the Bill will cause severe damage to the online gaming industry. It warned that crores of gamers could be pushed towards illegal gambling if the Bill becomes law.
The Federation suggested that instead of imposing a blanket ban, the government should regulate the industry in a phased manner. The online gaming market in India is currently valued at Rs 2 lakh crore in 2025.
Experts note that AIGF’s concerns are valid, as gaming has become a popular activity across the country. However, the government’s move highlights its intent to curb gaming addiction and shut down illegal betting apps operating from foreign countries.
A growing worry is the rising number of cases where individuals, particularly youth, are falling into heavy debts and in some instances losing their lives due to excessive online gaming and gambling.
