Hyderabad served as the joint capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana until June 2, 2024. After that date, Andhra Pradesh needed its own capital. The state government sent a report to the Home Ministry supporting Amaravati as the capital.

The AP government explained why Amaravati was chosen. It also listed development works and future plans. The Home Ministry asked from which date Amaravati should be treated as the capital. The state replied that it should be from June 2, 2024.

After reviewing the request, the Home Ministry moved to make Amaravati the nodal capital. It is now preparing to declare Amaravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh. This step will give the decision legal backing.

The Home Ministry has sought views from several departments. Urban development, legal and agriculture ministries have been asked to respond. The opinion of Niti Ayog will also be taken before finalising the note.

Officials say the aim is to complete all formalities soon. A final note will be prepared to give Amaravati full legal status. This will settle the long standing capital issue of Andhra Pradesh.
