AP Municipal Elections TDP Jana Sena BJP Alliance
The TDP, Jana Sena and BJP scripted a major victory in the 2024 Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections, winning 164 seats together. The YSRCP, which had won 151 seats in 2019, was reduced to just 11. The result showed the alliance’s strength and the role party workers played in bringing supporters together.
Now, as municipal elections approach, the three parties face a different challenge. Can they maintain the same unity at the grassroots level, or will local rivalries weaken their coordination?
Seat-Sharing Talks Take Centre Stage
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and BJP state president Madhav are involved in discussions over seat-sharing. With reservations finalised for 17 municipal corporations and 106 municipalities, the focus has shifted to candidate selection and the distribution of key posts.
Jana Sena leaders reportedly raised concerns about the reservation process during discussions with Chandrababu. The Chief Minister reportedly explained that the reservations were finalised according to the prescribed rules and population figures.
The next challenge is to identify candidates with strong local support while ensuring that all three alliance partners get a fair share.
Social Media Rivalry Raises Concerns
Despite cooperation among the senior leaders, differences between TDP and Jana Sena supporters continue to surface online. Disputes over local influence, flex banners and mayoral posts have triggered arguments in places such as Kakinada, Pithapuram and Pendurthi. Some supporters are already demanding important seats for their respective parties, even before the leadership finalises an agreement. Such arguments could complicate the campaign if they spill over into local political activity.
A Test Beyond Seat-Sharing
Of the 106 municipalities, 36 chairperson posts have been reserved for BC communities, 14 for SC communities and three for ST communities. The remaining posts fall under general and unreserved categories, including seats reserved for women.
Among the municipal corporations, Kurnool has been reserved for an SC woman and Rajamahendravaram for the SC general category. Kakinada and Machilipatnam have been allotted to BC women. Eluru, Anantapur and Chittoor fall under the BC general category.
The unreserved mayoral posts in Vijayawada, Tirupati, Nellore and Ongole are among the positions attracting attention. The alliance must balance local political interests with its broader electoral strategy.
The 2024 victory demonstrated what the three parties could achieve together. The municipal elections will now test whether that understanding extends to local leaders and party workers.
