The recent horrific rape incident in Kolkata has shaken the nation. A woman doctor was brutally raped and murdered at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The ruling TMC government, led by Mamata Banerjee, faced severe backlash for its poor investigation into the case. Eventually, the High Court transferred the case to the CBI.
The rape incident reignited the ongoing concern about women’s safety in India. It also led to widespread protests across the country demanding justice for the victim.
In response, the West Bengal Assembly unanimously passed the Aparajita Women and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024, earlier today. The bill was passed by a voice vote.
The state’s Minister of Law, Moloy Ghatak, introduced this anti-rape bill in the assembly. The bill proposes capital punishment (death sentence) for those convicted of rape if the crime results in the victim’s death or leaves her in a vegetative state.
It also proposes a life sentence without parole for those convicted of rape and gang rape.
During the discussion, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee described the bill as historic and a model for others. She added that any well-behaved individual would support it.
She announced that once the bill is passed, a special Aparajita Task Force will be established within the police department to ensure immediate investigation into rape cases.
Banerjee urged the opposition BJP party to support the bill and asked them to urge the Governor to pass it. The opposition BJP party supported the bill and called for its immediate implementation once it was passed.
