AP HC Sankranti Shock: Card Games Unlawful

Sankranthi is only days away, and many people travel from Hyderabad to Andhra Pradesh to celebrate the festival. Card games are a common part of these gatherings, played at homes and clubs by men and women, with money often exchanged during play.

The festive mood has now met an unexpected restriction. The Andhra Pradesh High Court has ruled that playing card games involving money is unlawful. This order applies across clubs and private venues during the festival period.

The ruling followed petitions filed by several clubs seeking permission to conduct card games. Bheemavaram Cosmopolitan, Lord Hoarding Hall Town, and Narsapuram Youth Club requested approval for 13 card games. The court rejected the plea and reiterated that card games played for money are illegal.

While the decision may dampen celebrations for some, others have welcomed the move. High stake card games have become increasingly common in recent years. Many see the ruling as a necessary step to curb risky gambling practices.

In recent times, more women have also begun visiting clubs to play card games for recreation and excitement. The court order now places clear legal limits on such activities, even during festive occasions.
