The Andhra Pradesh municipal elections have reached their final stage, with counting scheduled to begin at 8 AM across 92 urban local bodies. The results will determine the political strength of the ruling alliance and the YSRCP in urban areas.
A total of 60 lakh voters have decided the fate of 10,105 candidates contesting for councillor and corporator positions, while 520 candidates are in the race for mayor and chairperson posts.
The contest for 13 mayor positions has seen the TDP field candidates in 10 places, Jana Sena in two and the BJP in one. The YSRCP has contested all 13 seats. Of the 87 chairperson positions, 17 were elected unanimously, leaving 70 seats for a direct contest. The TDP is contesting 49, Jana Sena 17 and the BJP four, while the YSRCP has fielded candidates in all 70 places.
Counting will take place at 138 centres, involving 47,817 officials and staff. Since the elections were conducted using ballot papers, the process will involve sorting and bundling votes before the actual counting begins. Authorities have made arrangements to announce results by 8 PM.
For the ruling alliance, the elections are an opportunity to demonstrate public support for its development and welfare initiatives. For the YSRCP, the results will indicate whether it can retain its political influence in urban constituencies.
Beyond individual victories, the outcome will offer an important assessment of the political mood across Andhra Pradesh’s urban centres.
