AP Municipal Elections Rescheduled to November 1

The Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC) has rescheduled municipal elections in 99 urban local bodies to November 1 following reports of violence and legal developments. The decision was taken after reviewing reports submitted by district collectors and Superintendents of Police (SPs).

The final list of candidates will be published on October 25, while vote counting is scheduled for November 3.

The SEC had earlier suspended the election process in 100 urban local bodies after violence was reported at 19 locations. The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) subsequently approached the Supreme Court over the developments.

Mydukur municipality has been excluded from the revised schedule. The SEC will invite fresh nominations there before announcing a new polling date. Elections in 23 other locations will be held after the pending court cases are resolved.

The commission has not extended the nomination deadline, despite the YSRCP’s demand. The party is reportedly considering approaching the Supreme Court again over the issue.

The revised municipal election schedule could also affect the timetable for Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) elections in the state.
