Asking Wife To Do Household Work Not Cruelty: HC

The Delhi High Court stated that a husband expecting his wife to do household work cannot be called as “cruelty.” On the other side, the court also said that the wife asking her husband to live separately from the family is counted as “cruelty.”

The judgment was given in response to a case where a man petitioned against a family court’s refusal to grant him a divorce on the grounds of cruelty by his wife.

The petitioner argued that his wife constantly keeps fighting with him and also doesn’t do the household chores and was not willing to take responsibility.

In contrast, the wife denied the husband’s allegations stating that she did all household chores but his family wasn’t satisfied by it.

Obliging to his wife’s wishes, the man moved out of his family’s home to live separately with her. But soon after that, the wife went back to her maternal home.

The court stated that the wife ignored her marital responsibilities by living at her maternal home and by not allowing her husband to live with his family. Eventually, the court granted bail to the husband.
