BJP's NDA Victory Post Ignores TDP and JanaSena
The BJP’s official post celebrating the NDA’s 93 out of 100 victories in Andhra Pradesh municipal elections has raised a question. The post takes a dig at the Opposition’s EVM allegations, but makes little mention of the TDP and JanaSena, the two alliance partners that contested most of the seats.
The TDP contested 49 of the 70 municipal chairperson posts, while JanaSena contested 17. The BJP fielded candidates in just four. In the mayoral contests too, TDP contested 10 corporations, JanaSena two and the BJP one. These figures make it clear that the municipal contest was largely fought by the two regional allies.
The BJP’s post could have at least included Chandrababu Naidu and Pawan Kalyan. After all, it was the TDP and JanaSena that fought the bulk of these municipal elections. The BJP contested only a handful of seats, yet its post gives the impression that the victory was largely its own achievement. If it wants to celebrate the NDA result, it should also acknowledge the partners who did most of the work on the ground.
The elections were not entirely smooth either. The Supreme Court had to step in after complaints of candidates being obstructed during nominations. Videos alleging polling irregularities and intimidation also went viral, and repolling was ordered at some polling stations. These developments cannot simply be brushed aside while using the results to make a point about ballot papers and EVMs.
The NDA won this election together, but the BJP’s post hardly mentions TDP and JanaSena.
