BJP Wins Big In Mumbai BMC, First In 30 Years

The Bharatiya Janata Party has registered a historic victory in the Brihan Mumbai Corporation polls. For the first time, the party has swept the civic elections in India’s business capital.

Mumbai voters clearly rejected the Thackeray alliance, while the Congress suffered a major setback. Out of 227 seats, the BJP won 130 seats, while its ally Shiv Sena led in 27 seats.

The Thackeray brothers together secured 71 seats. The Indian National Congress managed to lead in only 14 seats, marking one of its weakest performances in the city.

The verdict left no room for doubt, and the BJP marked its win by distributing rasmalai. This was seen as a response to a campaign jibe made by Raj Thackeray involving Annamalai.

With this result, the BJP led Mahayuti alliance is set to take control of India’s richest civic body. Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde celebrated the decisive mandate.

The victory has ended the nearly 30 year undivided Shiv Sena dominance over the civic body. Senior BJP leaders said the result reflected Mumbai residents’ faith in the party’s governance and delivery on promises.

With this sweep, the BJP has added another major power centre to its political map. The Mumbai civic win further strengthens the party’s position in Maharashtra politics.
