In a landmark move, the Union Cabinet approved the proposal to hold simultaneous elections in India, recommended by a high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind.
Speaking to the media, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that this “One Nation One Election” will be held in two phases. The first phase will cover Lok Sabha and Assembly Elections whereas the second phase will cover local body elections. The second phase will happen within 100 days of the first phase.
Kovind’s committee submitted its report to the union government in March this year, just before the Lok Sabha polls. The Union Government is expected to introduce this bill in the next winter sessions of the Parliament.
The report outlined a plan for holding elections at the same time across the country to make the process smoother and reduce the number of elections. Right now, elections are held every few months in different parts of the country.
Recently, Home Minister Amit Shah asserted that simultaneous elections will definitely be introduced by the NDA government during this term.
On this year’s Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that “One Nation-One Election” is the only solution to avoid frequent elections in different states every year. He urged all state governments to support this proposal.
