Can Naidu Tackle the Polavaram Project?

Union Government poured Cold Water on the hopes of Andhra Pradesh government as it clarified that it will provide only the remaining cost of irrigation component of the project as per the estimates of April 1, 2014. The government also clarified that the irrigation component over and above the estimated cost post April 1, 2014, will have to be borne by the state government.

However, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu is trying to put up a brave face. “The issue pertaining to cost escalation is a technical issue. It will be resolved and we will get 100% funding,” he claimed. The state government will fund itself the hydel power project to use the power totally to itself.

Polavaram Multi-Purpose Irrigation Project comes with a total capacity of 194 TMC which will irrigate about Five Lakh Acres over Two Crops Every year. The Project will also generate 960MW of Hydel Power which is the cheapest available power in the market right now. Hence the project is said to be very beneficial for the state and is treated as the ‘Life Line’.
