Centre Cracks Whip On Same-Sex Marriages

India is a country where same-sex couples now move freely and confess their love for their partners without fear of public rejection. Despite all the activists, same-sex couples, and other supporters fighting for their cause, looks like being legally wedded seems to be a distant dream for such couples. In its latest move, the Centre has opposed petitions pending before the Supreme Court seeking recognition of same-sex marriages.

The reason, well the government feels such decisions must be left to the legislature and feels such laws “would cause complete havoc with the delicate balance of personal laws in the country and in accepted societal values”.

In fact, the Union government has filed an affidavit saying that marriage laws based on personal laws, codified laws relatable to various religious communities and customs of Indians recognize only the union of a man and a woman, which is also legally accepted.

The Centre further stated that it has been ingrained that the marriage of two people of the opposite sex has been socially, culturally, and legally ingrained which cannot be disturbed or diluted by “judicial interpretation”.
