Cash For Kids: Naidu’s Pay-check Offer For Bigger Families!

In a complete U-turn from decades of national population control messaging, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has announced immediate cash incentives for larger families. Speaking on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at a public meeting in Narasannapeta, Srikakulam district, Naidu declared that the state government will provide ₹30,000 immediately upon the birth of a third child and ₹40,000 for a fourth child to combat declining birth rates.

The policy shift is driven by deep concerns over a rapidly aging workforce and shrinking younger demographic across South India. Andhra Pradesh’s current Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has plummeted to 1.5, significantly below the internationally recognized replacement-level stability threshold of 2.1. Naidu warned that if these social trends continue, the state risks heading toward economic stagnation similar to Japan and South Korea, where an aging society has severely crippled workforce productivity and burdened local state infrastructure.

Rejecting the long-standing concept that children are an economic burden, Naidu asserted that a younger population is a state asset necessary to balance long-term growth. The announcement escalates an earlier March assembly proposal of ₹25,000 for a third child, signaling the government’s urgency to reverse demographic declines. Detailed operational frameworks for the cash disbursement scheme are scheduled to be formally released within the next month.
