Corrupt GHMC a Reason for Hyderabad’s Plight?

Waist level water and water flooded houses are a common sight in Hyderabad in the last one week. While the political parties are doing the blame game on one another, it is clear that the city lacks the proper infrastructure for the huge population it houses. GHMC which earns Thousands of Crores in the form of Taxes is plagued by corruption which is leading to improper town planning and Nullahs encroachment.

According to the figures available with Anti-Corruption Bureau’s Hyderabad Unit, GHMC is the third most corrupt body in the city after the Transport and Electricity departments. ACD had arrested 24 corrupt GHMC officers since 2011, mainly from Town Planning, Advertisement, and Sanitation departments, and seized crores in property, cash, and jewellery from them.

Also, there is no proper action on them which is leading to more corruption. The maximum punishment in such cases is a mere suspension. Interesting though corruption cases were pending on grade-3 Town Planning officers, four of them were promoted by the government. The officials are making huge money accepting bribes for issuing building occupancy certificates despite deviations in constructions.

It is when the calamities like this struck the city, the government calls for a strict action on these corrupt officials. Committees will be appointed to identify them which are more of eyewash for the moment. Telangana government also appointed a committee and asked it to submit a report by next month, let us see if things will be any different this time!
