Andhra Pradesh received the first cheque for Polavaram Project out of the promised help from the Central government the other day. 1981.54 Crore Cheque through NABARD was handed over to the state government at a specially arranged function in New Delhi, in the presence of the union ministers Uma Bharathi, Arun Jaitley and Venkaiah Naidu.

But almost at the same time, Telangana Assembly raised an objection about the project. Citing that the Project is likely to submerge Bhadrachalam Temple, Water Resources Minister Harish Rao informed the house that the state government has lodged a complaint with the NGT.

Telangana’s demand is that the project should be put on hold until NGT independently studies the project through an expert panel. He also told the house that the state government urged the Central government to stop the construction of the project with immediate effect.

Polavaram Multi-Purpose Irrigation Project comes with a total capacity of 194 TMC which will irrigate about Five Lakh Acres over Two Crops Every year. The Project will also generate 960MW of Hydel Power which is the cheapest available power in the market right now. Hence the project is said to be very beneficial for the state and is treated as the ‘Life Line’.
