It is very common to hear politicians threaten to file defamation cases and demand compensation if allegations against them are proven false. A defamation case is a civil lawsuit filed when someone’s reputation is harmed by false statements.
However, in many cases, politicians only threaten to file defamation suits without actually doing so. There are two main reasons for this. The first reason is that anyone filing a defamation case must deposit a certain amount of money with the court. Reportedly, an initial deposit of 10% of the claimed amount is required.
The second reason is that the person who files a defamation case must appear in court regularly. Their arguments need to be presented, and given the busy schedules of politicians and other celebrities, it can be challenging for them to spare time for each court hearing.
These are the two reasons why many politicians avoid filing defamation cases. However, TDP leader Nara Lokesh is taking a different approach. In 2018, he filed a defamation case against Sakshi Media, seeking ₹75 crores in damages for publishing an article he claims harmed his reputation.
According to Lokesh, he paid an initial deposit of ₹75 lakhs to proceed with the case against Sakshi. He attended court in Visakhapatnam two days ago regarding this case. Lokesh is determined to put an end to baseless allegations against him, which sets him apart from other politicians when it comes to defamation cases.
