Despite Jagan’s Personal Visit, Governor Sends Back A File

Although Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy went all the way to Raj Bhavan and tried to resolve the objections, Governor Bishwabhushan Harichandan had sent a crucial file back to the Government. The state government has amended the Universities Act to appoint those it likes in the newly introduced universities as Vice Chancellors.

The decision to send the file back seems to have been prompted by political interference in the appointment of VCs, which is contrary to the UGC rules. According to the UGC rules, the government should appoint a search committee for the appointment of VCs. One of the three names suggested by this search committee will be appointed by the Governor.

But the state government has amended the Universities Act to appoint visas as per government recommendations. While the issue is already in the court, the Government has sent a file to the governor seeking the appointment of VCs for Srivenkateswara, Srikrishnadevaraya, Rayalaseema, Dravida, Acharya Nagarjuna, and Andhra universities under the new law.

However, the file was put on hold by the governor and CM Jagan himself went to Raj Bhavan to clear the apprehensions of the Governor. But that did not work. It appears that the Governor took legal advice and sent the file back. This will be a huge embarrassment for the Government.
