Dhruv Rathee Alleges He Was Kidnapped From Home

YouTuber Dhruv Rathee has alleged that he was taken from his home on October 10 and held for around 22 to 23 hours without access to his phone or lawyer. In a video message, he denied claims that he holds a foreign passport and said he is an Indian citizen.

Rathee said around 20 people in plain clothes entered his home at about 7 am while he was asleep. He alleged that they pushed his mother aside, entered his bedroom and took him away without explaining why. He also claimed that his parents’ phones were seized and he was denied access to a lawyer.

Calling the incident a “kidnapping” rather than a lawful arrest, Rathee alleged that he was injured while being taken away. He said he was moved between police stations and held for nearly a day without being allowed to contact his lawyer.

Rathee linked the incident to protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He accused the Narendra Modi government of suppressing dissent and described the situation as an “unofficial Emergency”.

He also claimed that several other political leaders had been detained in connection with the protests. Rathee thanked climate activist Sonam Wangchuk for speaking out in support of their release.

Rathee said he was safe when he recorded the video but alleged that people were monitoring his movements and restricting him to his home. He said he would continue speaking out on issues concerning the country.

The claims about his detention, injuries and denial of legal access have not been independently verified. A response from the authorities would be needed to establish the circumstances of the incident.
