Gannavaram assembly constituency holds a significant place in Andhra Pradesh’s political landscape, boasting a rich history of prominent leaders.
Established in 1955, it has seen influential figures like Puchchalapalli Sundarayya and Kakani Venkataratnam representing it.
Sundarayya secured victory thrice as an MLA from this constituency, followed by four wins by Congress candidates. However, with the rise of TDP, the political dynamics shifted, leading to TDP’s dominance in the region.
TDP secured three consecutive victories in Gannavaram since 2009, establishing it as a stronghold. Vallabhaneni Vamsi, who won twice from this constituency under the TDP banner, created a leadership vacuum when he defected to YSRCP. However, Yarlagadda Venkatarao’s entry into TDP revitalized its prospects in the constituency, presenting a formidable challenge to Vamsi.
Vamsi’s aggression has dwindled due to various factors, raising doubts about his candidacy. Nevertheless, he ultimately decided to contest the election, albeit facing significant opposition within YSRCP. Conversely, TDP’s cadres are firmly supporting Yarlagadda Venkatarao, buoyed by the advantage of the Kamma community’s backing.
Vamsi’s decision to switch allegiances to YSRCP incurred resentment among the Kamma community, who viewed it as a betrayal facilitated by Chandrababu Naidu. Despite Vamsi’s public apology, the damage to his reputation among Kammas seems irreversible, with many rallying against him.
Gannavaram, comprising four mandals, witnessed Yarlagadda Venkatarao amassing support across the board, with TDP leaders aligning with him. He brings natural aggression to his leadership, evident from his narrow defeat in the previous election. Since joining TDP, Vallabhaneni faced opposition and harassment, leading to a lack of support within YSRCP itself.
Allegations of harassment and biased treatment during his tenure with TDP further fueled support for Yarlagadda, with many of Vamsi’s opponents rallying behind him.
The stage is set for a heated electoral battle in Gannavaram, with Yarlagadda Venkatarao posing a significant challenge to Vallabhaneni’s candidacy. Due to Vamsi’s politics, this election has become do or die for him.
