Elon Musk’s X Sues Indian Government

In a rather surprising move, Elon Musk’s company X has filed a case against the Central government. A petition was filed to this effect in Karnataka High Court.

The allegation is that the government is controlling the content which is against law. It also said that the central government was unilaterally trying to impose censorship on X.

Elon Musk sued the government for alleged censorship and IT Act violations. The company owned by US billionaire Musk has raised objections against arbitrary interpretation of Information Technology (IT) Act. It further alleges that the government of India violates Supreme Court rulings and curtails free expression online.

Yet another allegation is that the government is using a parallel content-blocking mechanism, bypassing the structured legal process.

X said that this violates the Supreme Court ruling of 2015 in Shreya Singhal’s case, that content can be blocked through a judicial process or a legally defined route.

The petition comes with a background of increased government scrutiny of online content and content generated by AI in particular. The case highlights the tussle between Indian government and global tech giants over digital governance, freedom of expression and a balance between national security and individual liberties.
