Trash collection trucks make multiple trips across Hyderabad every day. A charge of ₹100 is collected for this service. However, many residents still refuse to pay and continue to throw garbage on the roads.
Several hotels and shops also dump their waste openly on the streets. To tackle this growing issue, the GHMC and city police have launched a special drive.
As per the new rules, anyone caught dumping trash on the roads can face up to 8 days in jail. In the first phase of this drive, police detained five individuals in Borabanda for illegal dumping.
The arrested persons were produced before the court, which imposed a fine of ₹1,000 on each. The police said this is just the beginning, and stricter punishments will follow soon.
Hyderabad’s waste problem has worsened over time. Roads and nalas are getting blocked due to garbage, leading to mosquito-borne diseases and unbearable stench, especially during the monsoon season.
The GHMC and police aim to address this with strict enforcement. While some citizens welcome the move, others feel the penalties are too low to bring real change.
Opposition parties have also criticised the government for neglecting public health. Many people feel the authorities should do more to prevent garbage dumping in the first place.
To handle the issue effectively, GHMC and city police have now decided to impose fines on first-time offenders. If the offence is repeated, jail time will follow.
