GHMC polls to be postponed by 9 months?

While the high court of Hyderabad is urging to conduct GHMC elections as soon as possible, the Telangana government is trying to buy as much as time possible. The government is likely to submit a request to the court to allow the corporation nine months time to conduct the elections.

The tenure of the GHMC’s previous elected body completed in December 2014 and the TRS government is postponing the elections citing the need to divide the GHMC in to two. According to officials, 147 days would be spent in delimitation of wards and another 102 days for reservation of wards into BC, SC, ST and OC categories. After this, 35 days would be the requirement for conduct of elections.

It is an open secret that TRS government is trying to buy as much as time possible to strengthen itself in GHMC area. The ruling party is already busy in encouraging defections from other parties to get stronger there. We will have to see how the high court responds to this request!
