The Election Commission has allotted the ‘Glass Tumbler’ symbol to independent candidates in several constituencies where the Janasena is not contesting.
As part of alliances with TDP and BJP, Jana Sena is contesting 21 Legislative Assembly and 2 Lok Sabha seats.
In the constituencies where the party is not contesting, the glass symbol has been put on the list of free symbols of the Election Commission and allotted to independent candidates.
Many TDP and Janasena Rebels and candidates with names similar to Janasena candidates have got the Glass Tumbler Symbol. There is a chance that the votes of Janasena will be transferred to these candidates due to the symbol confusion.
Janasena filed a petition in the High Court against the decision taken by the EC. In this petition, the party’s General Secretary requested that the glass allotted to them should not be allotted to other candidates. The party’s lawyer argued that they gave a petition to the EC to remove this symbol from the free symbols list.
He informed the court that even though the petition has been given for the second time, no decision has been taken yet. He added that due to Janasena’s alliance with TDP and BJP, allocating this symbol to independent candidates will cause damage to the alliance.
On the other hand, the EC’s lawyer told the court that the Election Commission will take a decision on the request given by Janasena within 24 hours.
Taking this into consideration, the court adjourned the further hearing to Wednesday. TDP has also filed a supplementary petition on this matter and requested the court to hear its arguments as well.
EC’s lawyer asking for 24 hours time without saying no is a positive sign, the allies believe.
