The relationship between India and the United States has reached a worrying low. President Donald Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Indian goods, later hiking them to 50%, citing India’s purchase of Russian oil as an indirect support to the Ukraine war.
Key Indian export sectors like textiles, jewellery, seafood, and auto components are already suffering from the tariff blow. These disruptions have started impacting the broader Indian economy, leading to reduced exports and slowing growth.
In response, the Indian government rolled out GST 2.0 in an effort to boost domestic demand and cushion the economy. However, India also made it clear that it will continue purchasing Russian oil, a stance that has further strained ties with the US.
To add to the pressure, the Trump administration introduced a $100,000 annual fee for every H1B visa holder. For many US employers, this makes retaining Indian IT talent financially unsustainable, which may lead to large-scale job losses.
Over 70% of H1B visa holders in the US are Indians. Naturally, this policy targets India more than any other country. Many view this as a direct economic and diplomatic attack on India’s workforce and global presence.
Interestingly, this comes despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi having earlier shown support at the ‘Abki Baar Trump Sarkaar’ event in the US. Now, Trump appears frustrated by India’s closer ties with Russia and China, especially after Modi’s appearance at the SCO summit in Tianjin.
To make matters worse, the US seems to be warming up to Pakistan, a traditional rival and security concern for India. Rumours also suggest India refused to back Trump’s campaign for a Nobel Peace Prize, which could be another reason behind the tension.
Whatever the cause, this breakdown in diplomacy marks a serious setback for India. The US remains a key global partner, and deteriorating ties could severely hurt India’s economic future, especially with the H1B clampdown now hitting common citizens.
Unless US courts intervene to block this executive order, the new visa rules could devastate Indian markets and families dependent on overseas jobs. This situation calls for urgent and strategic dialogue at the highest level.
It may require stepping back or making compromises, but in matters of national interest, ego should never come in the way. The Modi government must act swiftly to bring this crisis under control.
