Social Media Ban For Kids: Lokesh Gives Instructions

Nara Lokesh has issued instructions to ministers and officials to explore measures to protect children from exposure to social media. A cabinet sub-committee meeting was held under his leadership to discuss accountability on digital platforms.

Lokesh emphasised the need to study systems followed in Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, and France. He said global models should be reviewed before framing rules, while also keeping Supreme Court guidelines in mind.

Minister Nadella Manohar informed Lokesh that Malaysia allows social media access only for those above 16 through My Digital ID. He explained that KYC and passport details are linked to regulate usage.

All ministers present agreed in principle to impose a ban on social media for children up to the age of 16. However, officials were asked to conduct further studies on age limits followed in other countries before finalising the policy.

Lokesh also stressed strict action against those who repeatedly spread fake news or instigate caste, religious, and regional tensions on social media. He instructed officials to hold discussions with representatives of Google, Meta, and X.

During the meeting, it was decided to appoint a state adjudication officer under Section 46 of the IT Act. The officer will be responsible for taking action against individuals spreading malicious or spiteful information online.

Officials also informed Lokesh that some cases filed through the central government’s Sahayog portal have been withdrawn. Further clarity on enforcement mechanisms is expected after detailed reviews.
