Monsoons pouring water on KCR’s Dream Project

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandra Sekhar Rao’s pet project, Mission Kakatiya met with a roadblock very early due to the deficit monsoon. The scheme aims at reviving about 9000 water tanks in the first phase through desiltation, renovation and improvement of catchment areas. However experts say this can not be achieved if the monsoon is not surplus as the ground water levels will decrease due to deficit monsson.

The average water level in Telangana is falling drastically from April. Experts say the implementation of the Rs 2,000 crore Mission Kakatiya will not do any good unless the state receives sufficient rain. But the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast hinted at the probability of a ‘deficient’ and ‘below-normal’ monsoon in greater parts of the country this year disappointing the new state.

On the other side with out caring the technical difficulties, Telangana government is carrying out works on improvement of catchment areas, renovation and desiltation in 6,000 out of the 9,000 water tanks identified in the first phase. Government sources the tanks renovation works will still work in deficit monsoon as they recharge groundwater due to the increased storage capacity of tanks which would only allow more water to percolate to the ground.
