Interestingly the growth rate of Hindus between 2001-2011 was nearly 17 percent while that of Muslims 24.6 percent. Hindus constituted the majority with 79.8 percent, but their overall percentage fell from 80.45 percent in 2001.
On the other side, the population percentage of Sikhs and Buddhists reported a decline during the same time while there is no rise in the population of Christians and Jains. The data also indicates that Muslim population rise may also be attributed to illegal Bangladeshi migrants to states like Assam, Bihar and West Bengal.
